Facial and Dentoalveolar Infections Charlotte NC

Man flossing in mirror to avoid facial and dentoalveolar infections after visiting Greater Charlotte Oral and Facial Surgery in Charlotte, NCOur face and mouth’s constant contact with bacteria and germs make it highly vulnerable to contract facial, oral, and dental infections. This is why all dental professionals encourage their patients to practice regular and frequent home hygiene efforts like brushing and flossing. When you don’t, you are far more likely to contract an infection.

Infections involving the maxillofacial region can become life-threatening if not treated properly and immediately. Indications of infection include pain or swelling around the face, mouth, jaw, or neck area. Dr. Marashi at Greater Charlotte Oral and Facial Surgery offers a wide range of surgical options to correct and remove infections.

One of the most common dental infections we see is the development of a tooth abscess. A tooth abscess is formed by a bacterial infection within your mouth and causes a pocket of pus to develop around the infected tooth. Most of the time a tooth abscess is developed as a result of periodontal disease, tooth decay, or a broken tooth. Sometimes, a root canal procedure can help restore the infected tooth without an extraction. If the tooth cannot be restored with a root canal, it must be removed. After the tooth is removed, your doctor will clean the area of extraction to ensure the infection has been cleared.

If the infection is severe, you may need additional treatment. Usually, this involves relieving the pus that has developed by placing an incision in the area of the abscess after the tooth has been removed. If the infection has spread to nearby teeth, your jaw, or other areas of your mouth, you may be put on antibiotics to prevent further spreading.
