How Long Does Wisdom Tooth Extraction Take?

Posted on 6/6/2022 by Greater Charlotte Oral and Facial Surgery
How Long Does Wisdom Tooth Extraction Take? One of the primary questions our patients ask about wisdom teeth concerns the time it takes to have them removed. You can have this procedure performed in under an hour, or about 45 minutes, so it can be done in a minimal amount of time and greatly improve your future oral health.

What Are Wisdom Teeth and Why Should They Be Removed?

Wisdom teeth represent the third set of molars in the back of the mouth. They normally develop between 17 and 25 years, and are spotted on x-ray imaging. Most people opt for removal when the teeth are not able to come in or they are causing them pain discomfort. In cases of impaction, the teeth may become trapped inside the gums and jawbone, which proves to be quite painful. Some teeth may come in at a wrong angle and press against the other healthy teeth leading to crowding and pain. They can also be hard to clean because of their location.

What Happens Before the Procedure?

Before you go through a wisdom tooth extraction, you will meet with us to review the process. During the appointment, make sure you tell us about any health problems you are currently experiencing or current prescription drugs or supplements you may be taking. Voice any concerns you may have about the surgery and tell us what type of anesthesia you prefer we administer. You can either be numbed or given an IV that will allow you to sleep during the process.

Post-operative Care

It usually takes about 2 weeks to fully recover from a 45-minute wisdom tooth removal. During the first 24-48 hours, you will need to rest and avoid strenuous activities. Make sure you have someone to drive you home after the surgery.

Do you need your wisdom teeth removed? If so, give us a call to schedule an appointment for a consultation. We can help prepare you for the procedure so you can experience a reliable and successful outcome.
